Booksarelikechocolatekarenlopp

Like a velvet wrapped chocolate box, book covers are important. They should convey a message, scream ‘Pick Me!’, enticing the reader to turn it over and read the blurb. Yet, how many times have you been disappointed or surprised by the that promise? I have.

I love the surprise of the powdered sugar coated cover filled with a nutty crunch and rich chocolate suspense.

Or a dark cocoa dusted cover that is full of bright colored sticky situations with a burst of sweetness.

How about a firm, smooth cover of bitter-sweet chocolate only to be grabbing for a napkin to catch the cream weeping from that delightful center?

So next time you start to skip over a book, take a bite first. Remember, the true soul of a book is found in the author’s story. Covers sell the first click, but the first words, the ending whisper sell that book and the next. Some will not be to your taste, but the experience of your taste buds will expand and guide you to the perfect chocolate… um book.

Please tell me your about your latest sensory delight.

Have fun reading. AND DON”T FORGET THE CHOCOLATE

BLURB

Owen Todd Jordan Riley has a secret. He’s a shape shifter who has been hunting and killing his own kind. To him the only good shifter is a dead shifter. Revenge for the death of a friend motivates him, and nothing stands in his way . . . except Katrina Romanovski, the woman he is falling in love with.

Deputy coroner Katrina Romanovski has a secret, too. She hunts and kills paranormal beings like Owen. At least she did. When she rescues Owen from an attack by a werebear she is thrust back into the world she thought she’d left. Determined to find out what Owen knows about the bear, she begins a relationship meant to collect information. What she gets is something quite different-love with a man she suspects of murder. Can she reconcile his deception and murderous revenge spree and find a way to redeem him? Or will she condemn him for the same things she has done and walk away from love?

Excerpt:

A crash in the alley stopped Katrina Romanovski mid-stride. Like the October mist swirling in off the lake, her gypsy blood stirred sending her intuition into high gear. Something unnatural was happening.

Go see what’s wrong. She heard her father’s voice as clearly as if he stood next to her.

On the heels of his words came her mother’s pragmatic warning in clipped British tones. You know what curiosity killed. Katrina pushed the ever-present warning aside. Mom never approved of Dad’s supernatural hunts and even less of his drawing her into them.

Pulling the oversized cross she always wore out from under her shirt, Kat looked around for a weapon. Please, not a vampire. I hate vampires

Blood Brothers by C.D. Hersh

Today, I want to welcome C.D. Hersh and there newest book “Blood Brothers”.

Blood Brothers CoverBlurb:

When Delaney Ramsey is enlisted to help train two of the most powerful shape shifters the Turning Stone Society has seen in thousands of years, she suspects one of them is responsible for the disappearance of her daughter. To complicate matters, the man has a secret that could destroy them all. Bound by honor to protect the suspect, Delaney must prove his guilt without losing her life to his terrible powers or revealing to the police

Shifter Trivia Quiz

Karen, thanks so much for having us today. Since we write about shape shifters we’ve crafted a shape shifter trivia quiz to see if readers can figure out the difference between commonly know shape shifters and our shifters.

  1. Which of these shape shifters can change into an animal?
  2. werewolf b. Alexi Jordan         c. selkie
  3. Which shifter uses a magic ring to change shapes?
  4. berserker b. Turning Stone Member  c. Kitsune
  5. Which shifter can mimic other people?
  6. púca b. Turning Stone Member  c. Leshy
  7. Which shifter has an alter-ego of the opposite sex?
  8. Skinwalker b. Turning Stone Member  c. vampire
  9. Which shifter can mind shift with you?
  10. Wendigo b. Rhys Temple        c. aswang

If you answered “b” one time then you have been fooled by the nine-tailed Kitsune trickster who insinuated itself into your dreams to create an illusion that you knew the answers.

If you answered “b” two times then you have been hiding in the woods with the Slavic male woodland spirit the Leshy and don’t know much about shape shifters, which could be dangerous if a human eating Wendigo or aswang is around.

If you answered “b” three out of five times you might have been distracted by selkie beauties who left their seal skin hidden somewhere. Find a seal skin and you can keep a selkie beauty/hunk for yourself.

If you answered “b” four out of five times you did fairly well and were only led astray once. Of course that means a púca was close by to fool you that one time, but you didn’t let the Norse warrior, the berserker, distract you with his incredible strength.

If you’ve answered “b” every time then you know about our shifters and must have read The Promised One. You also avoided the gaze of a Skinwalker and didn’t freeze up with fear upon encountering all these shifters.

Of course if you didn’t answer “b” at all then you need to read The Turning Stone Chronicles and find out about our shifters and the things they can do. Here’s an excerpt from our newest book, Blood Brothers, to get you started:

The telephone jangling pulled Delaney Ramsey out of a deep sleep. Moving the digital clock on the nightstand closer to her, she squinted at the bright green numbers. Three a.m. She fumbled for the receiver.

“If you’re calling at this ungodly hour, someone better be dead,” she mumbled into the phone.

“Delaney, ’tis Eli McCraigen.”

Sitting up, she pulled the duvet cover with her. Why was the Keeper of the Stone calling her? “What’s wrong, Eli?”

“Dinna worry yerself. ’Tis good news.”

Slumping against the headboard, she yawned, the adrenalin draining away with his words. “If it’s such good news, why couldn’t you wait until tomorrow?”

“I need ye tae call a special meeting o’ the council before they get away from the city.”

“All fifteen?”

“Nay, only the senior council. I’ve a new Promised One tae present.”

“Why wasn’t he presented last night at Samhain?”

“He hadnae committed tae the cause, and he dinna have a ring until minutes before midnight.”

“This is highly irregular, Eli. I don’t know if I can get the council to agree.”

“Ye have tae. He’s a verra special man.”

“A Promised One who hasn’t even had his ring more than a few hours. That’s unheard of. How can you expect someone like that to pass even one proof test?”

“He’s already shown me two–and they’re not the paltry tests most Promised Ones have failed. He has the elusive, legendary powers, and he did them using the power of other shifters’ rings.”

She snapped awake. “Other shifters’ rings? Whose?”

“Mine, Alexi Jordan’s and Sylvia Jordan’s.”

Delaney switched the light on, knocking her reading glasses to the floor with the motion. Great. She’d just bought them. Leaning over the edge of the bed, she retrieved the glasses and put them on. “Sylvia Jordan Riley?”

“’Tis that what the she-witch is calling herself now?”

“Seems so. Her name has come across my desk in her official capacity with Homeland Security.”

“That’s the other thing I need from ye. Sylvia’s butting intae Rhys’ and Alexi’s jobs and personal lives. I’m pretty certain she knows what he is, too. I need reinforcements.”

In all the years she’d known Eli, he’d never asked for assistance. And he comes to me now. At the worst possible time. “I’m honored you’d think of me, but I can’t do more than call the council for you. Ask one of them to get your reinforcements.”

“Fine, the council can arrange that, but I need ye on a more personal mission.”

“I’m in the middle of something very important and time consuming. I can’t help.”

“Dinna ye know who’s asking ye, lassie?”

She knew all right. The most powerful man in the entire Turning Stone Society. She was crazy to even consider refusing him. Her position on the council rested on his say so. However, finding her daughter meant more to her than anything else. “Normally I’d be willing to die for you, Eli, but–”

“Let’s pray dying won’t be what we’ll be needing. But I could be putting ye in a verra dangerous position.”

That did it. No way could she help if it might cost her life. Not now. Not until she found Lila. “I’m sorry. I can’t.”

“I need ye, Delaney. Come tae University Hospital and see me. I’m in ER.”

“ER? Are you all right?”

“We had a little run-in with a panther.”

The Adventures of

Xavier & Vic

Book 2

The Missing Partner

By Liza O’Connor

Cases to be Resolved:

The ‘New Woman’ Who Lost Her Old Mind

The Lost Servant of Dante’s Hell

The Disappearance of a Very Important Man

The Abduction of Sneaky Snake by a Grand Elephant

The Cat Who Wore Too Much

blurb

Vic Hamilton takes the reins of the investigation office, while Xavier Thorn disappears on an assignment for the British government. Her caseload is entirely ‘lost and recovery’ cases. In the midst of solving all her client’s problems, she learns that the government has lost Xavier. With the help of the gypsy pirate Jacko, and her driver Davy, Vic rushes against time to rescue everyone.

Most alarming, she befriends and hires a dangerous criminal as an employee of Xavier Thorn’s Private Inquiries—without Xavier’s permission.

An Excerpt

Stone frowned. “I’m sure you’ll be more comfortable telling this story in my office.” When he turned and left the room, Vic had no choice but to follow along with Jacko and the sergeant. She knew Stone’s frown meant he had no interest saving servants from gentry. If only Xavier were here to bully Scotland Yard along.

Once everyone took their seats in Stone’s office, he asked Victor to tell the story again for his benefit.

“Mr. Robinson and his butler have run a prostitution business out of his house for at least eighteen years, possibly longer.”

Stone rubbed his temples as if he had a headache. “What precisely do you think he does?”

“Jonston hires a plethora of beautiful young maids and handsome gardeners. Presently, they have sixteen such maids, and ten young gardeners.”

“There is no law against having too many servants.”

“True, but forcing them into prostitution against their will is against the law.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Do you consider the testimony of the twenty-six victims as proof?”

His finger rapped his note pad in agitation. “The number of claims will help, but the law favors the gentry’s word over the poor.”

Victor slammed her hand down on the arm of her chair. “Well, if we had time, I would suggest you send a policeman undercover so he could be one of the fifty gentlemen who visit every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during business hours.”

Stone frowned further.

“The neighbors across the street can attest to the quantity of visitors,” Vic added and then lost patience with him. “Inspector Stone, if you do not do something soon, my cook’s niece will end up in some Sultan’s harem. Now stop frowning and help me!”

About the author

First, I got tired of telling my proper blog. Now, I’m tired of telling my improper bio. So what’s left?

Liza O’Connor was born, raised badly, left the South/Midwest and wandered off to find nicer people on the east coast…and employment, there were no jobs in the Mid-west. There she worked for the meanest man on Wall Street, while her psychotic husband tried to kill her three times. (So much for finding nicer people.) Then one day she declared enough, got a better job, divorced her husband, and fell in love with her new life where people behaved normally. All those bad behaviors has given her lots of fodder for her humorous romances. Please buy these books, because otherwise, she’ll become grumpy and write troubled novels instead. And given her past, they will likely traumatize you.

Mostly humorous books by Liza:

Saving CaseyOld woman reincarnates into troubled teen’s body. (Half funny/half traumatizing)

Ghost LoverTwo British brothers fall in love with the same young woman. Ancestral ghost is called in to fix the situation. There’s a ghost cat too. (Humorous Contemporary Romance)

A Long Road to Love Series: (Humorous Contemporary odd Romance)

Worst Week EverLaugh out loud week of disasters of Epic proportions.

Oh Stupid HeartThe heart wants what it wants, even if it’s impossible.

Coming to ReasonThere is a breaking point when even a saint comes to reason.

Climbing out of HellThe reconstruction of a terrible man into a great one.

The Troublesome ApprenticeThe greatest sleuth in Victorian England hires a young man who turns out to be a young woman.

Hi Books and More and all you fabulous readers out there *waves* Thank you so much for having me today! My romantic suspense, Maximum Risk (Book #1, Wolff Securities) released this month so I’m very excited to be here! Thank you so much for sharing it with me!!

JenniferLowery_MaximumRisk_200px

Blurb:

It should have been a simple rescue mission…

Retired Pararescueman, Quinn Wolff, wrote the book on how to stay alive during a mission when he founded Wolff Securities, an elite private sector security firm. When he fast-ropes down to save missing humanitarian aid worker, Avery Marks, in the remote mountains of Azbakastan he isn’t prepared for the brave, stubborn woman who challenges the rules he wrote in order to protect her.

But when it comes to matters of the heart nothing is simple…

Avery Marks learned a long time ago to take care of herself, but when her convoy is attacked, her friends and coworkers murdered, she has to rely on the aid of intensely capable and handsome, Quinn Wolff to get her safely out of the country. His skills keep her alive, but his kisses put her in danger. In danger of losing her heart. That’s a risk she can’t take ever again.

Content Warning: Sexual content

In honor of my release I am giving away an e-book copy of any one of my books (go to my WEBSITE to choose) to one lucky commenter so please leave me a comment with your EMAIL so I can contact you if you win!!

Quinn and Avery have agreed to do a character interview for you today! Yes, it took some doing, but I managed to get them to answer a few questions for me. So, without further ado, here are the hero and heroine of Maximum Risk, Quinn Wolff and Avery Marks!

How did you first meet your writer?

Quinn: When she decided to pull me on a rescue mission in the Middle East.

Avery: I was the rescue mission.

Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?

Quinn: Hell, no. I run a private security firm, our business shouldn’t be in a book.

Avery: I’ve been written about in brochures and magazines with my charity work, but never a book.

Did you have a hard time convincing your author to write any particular scenes for you?

Quinn: More like she convinced us. I’m still not happy with what you did, Jennifer.

Jennifer: I know, and I’m sorry, but I had to go where the story took me.

Avery: *sadly* I don’t like that part of the story. Let’s just move on.

Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?

Avery: That’s a loaded question. Romantic Suspense is great and all, but it means hell for Jen’s characters. I like the romance, not so much the suspense. Too nerve-wracking.

Quinn: I prefer to keep my wife out of the suspense part.

If you could rewrite anything in your book, what would it be?

Jennifer: I can’t let them answer that because it will give away the book. They don’t like to talk about it anyway.

*Quinn and Avery nod in unison*

Do you like the way the book ended?

Avery: Despite what we had to go through to get there, yes. *laces her fingers through Quinn’s*

What do you do for a living?

Avery: You already know Quinn runs a private sector security firm. I’m founder of Books for Change. A non-profit organization that helps teach women and girls to read in deprived areas of the world.

What are you proudest of?

Quinn: My family.

*Avery nods, squeezing his hand*

What do you like most about where you live?

Avery: Quinn’s family lives on a private lake in Michigan. It’s the most peaceful place I’ve ever been. I love it there. Although it took some time to get used to not having the city outside my window.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy Sunday?

Quinn smiles: Mom cooks a big family dinner and afterwards we play our traditional football game.

Avery: Translated into five alpha male brothers kicking the crap out of each other *she smiles*

If you knew a zombie apocalypse was coming in one week, what would you do?

Avery: I have the Wolff brothers surrounding me. I would have no worries. Not that I believe in zombies.

EXCERPT:

Quinn sat back on his haunches and scrubbed a hand down his face. Avery slept soundly. He wanted to tend her other injuries, but sleep would heal her body faster than anything he could do.

Escape and evasion would be slow going with her injured feet. Without boots to protect them, it would be agony for Avery. Even with boots, walking would be difficult. Running, out of the question. He would carry her.

Quietly, he packed up the supplies and sat down a few feet away from where Avery slept. He snapped off the penlight, his NVGs next to him in case he needed them before his eyes adjusted to the dark.

Avery whimpered. Seconds later, a stifled scream.

Quinn repositioned to where she lay and put a hand on her shoulder.

She flinched and tried to scoot away. “Please. No more,” she moaned.

A nightmare. Instead of waking her, he stretched out on the ground and pulled her into his arms. The last thing he wanted was to wake her and make her remember. Bad enough she couldn’t escape her torment even in sleep.

He wrapped one arm around her waist, using his other arm as a pillow. She lashed out, her nostrils flaring as she drew in deep, gasping breaths.

“Avery, it’s Quinn.”

“PJ,” she murmured and instantly settled down. Her body relaxed and little by little her breathing slowed.

Quinn rested his chin on top of her head. More protective urges surged through him and he shifted a little closer.

“What did they do to you, Avery Marks?” he murmured.

Author Bio:

NY Times & USA Today bestselling author, Jennifer Lowery grew up reading romance novels in the back of her math book and on the bus to school, and never wanted to be anything but a writer.  Her summers were spent sitting at the kitchen table with her sisters spinning tales of romance and intrigue and always with a tall glass of ice tea at their side.

Today, Jennifer is living that dream and she couldn’t be happier to share her passion with her readers.  She loves everything there is about romance.  Her stories feature alpha heroes who meet their match with strong, independent heroines.  She believes that happily ever after is only the beginning of her stories. And the road to that happy ending is paved with action, adventure, and romance. As her characters find out when they face danger, overcome fears, and are forced to look deep within themselves to discover love.

Jennifer lives in Michigan with her husband and two children.  When she isn’t writing she enjoys reading and spending time with her family.
