Tight jeans, scuffed up boots and cowboy hats. How can you not love cowboys? And it takes a special kind of woman to love them. Strong, courageous, and foremost a woman that knows who she is. That being said, I simply love the Old West and all the great movies and books that are out there. Having grown up reading every Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour book available, I fell in love with that period of history. And as a testament to those great authors, the first time I visited New Mexico and Arizona it was like going home. Now I live in the Southwest.
Growing up in farming country, I didn’t know there was any other way to dress than blue jeans and boots. Herding cows, chasing pigs and going to rodeo’s was what we all did. And pick-up trucks were the favored means of transportation. But not just for show, they were used everyday for chores. As for music?? Well let’s just say you better know all the country singers and their songs. I’m still a huge fan of country music. Really, what else it out there?? LOL.
The best movies ever made were westerns. How abut the Duke? Or Clint Eastwood? I loved them all.
My inspiration comes from reading the true stories of all the courageous men and women that lived in the west and overcame so many hardships and trials. They persevered in the face of dangers, bad weather, and little water. Being self-sufficient was a must. And, to my delight, I had a great-great-grandfather that was a US Marshal. So in my second novel, that I don’t have a publishing date yet, I used a bit of his history and made my hero a US Deputy Marshal.
So tell me who your favorite movies or books are. I’d love to know.
Now here is an excerpt from my book.
Mike struggled to open his eyes. Grogginess wafted through his mind. He tried to rub the dull ache on his head but something held his arms. Cotton filled his mouth. He licked his dry lips and tasted blood. Smelled smoke. Voices filled with urgency echo in the distance but he couldn’t make out the words.
He eased one eye open, then the other. He blinked to clear the blur and shook his head. Pain drove his eyes shut. Heat licked at him.
“Come on, boss, wake up.”
That voice. It sounded familiar. He forced his eyes open again but held still.
“That’s it, Mike. Kathleen needs you.”
Kathleen? He smiled. Oh yeah, she wanted him to make love to her again. His sweet, passionate wife. His eyes drifted lower.
“No, Mike, fight it off.”
“Yes, boss. Get your eyes open and keep ‘em open.”
Mike tried to get up but his legs didn’t work. A frosty chill cramped his gut. Something was terribly wrong. “Kathleen?”
